Is there one ‘real life experience’ that stands out for you?

There are so many! But one of my favourites is traveling in local bus with local people, talking about their lives. One time the bus broke down and my group was given food and water to share with the locals. I was so touched by their love and hospitality.

What is the most special thing about the region you lead in?

Definitely the people, culture and colour. You see people with little means but with huge hearts and smiles, and a positive attitude. It is just incredible and also gives you positive energy.

What is your favourite travel destination and why?

Batukaras Beach – because it’s close to nature. You can go to the river to see a beautiful sunset, and at the same time you can hear water flowing by and the chirping of birds. It is less populated and people are so innocent and helpful, there are no hassles. It’s a clean, peaceful and a calm place.

What is your favourite travel memory?

Sailing on the River and camping on an island. Enjoying delicious food that was cooked on traditional way, sitting around bonfire, sharing stories and watching all the stars come out.

What tip would you give to someone who’s seeking ‘real life Experience’ while travelling?

Jump in a local bus and ask people on the bus about places to visit and where to eat. Maybe – if you’re lucky – you’ll get yourself invited to a wedding or a festival and will get the chance to really experience the way of life in that place.

To an outsider, it sounds like a bit of a holiday – what are the realities of life on the road?

The role of group leader is like that of an orchestra conductor. We need to ensure our passengers enjoy real experiences and provide the best customer service and local interaction, but also to manage relationships with our suppliers and partners. It’s not really a holiday!

What led you to becoming a leader?

I love to travel and gain new insights into local culture and history. As a good leader, it’s important to have a good personality and be willing to listen and learn from other people.

What is the most special thing about the region you lead in?

The Dragon Village, is the place where they keep the traditions and culture from generation to generation.

What is your favourite travel memory?

I took passengers to join a Christmas Day celebration in Yogyakarta. We joined lots of locals playing games in the square park and walked around the main street with thousands more people. Lots of Indonesian people wanted pictures with my group! Everyone said this was the best experience – one they never expected.

What tip would you give to someone who’s seeking ‘real life experience’ while travelling?

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Don’t be afraid of the local language and be brave to try some new things – like getting up early to practice tai chi with locals in the park.

What led you to becoming a leader?

Working in tourism industry was my aspiration when I was younger. I enjoyed getting to know people from all over the world. I started as a local guide in my hometown and worked hard to become a leader.

Is there one ‘real life experience’ that stands out for you?

The best real life experiences often happen by chance. Sometimes on our journey we will see a ceremonial and be invited to join, other times visiting traditional marketplaces is a great chance to interact with the local people.

What is the most special thing about the region you lead in?

Indonesia is an amazing country, it has a balance of up and coming cities and beautiful beaches. Spectacular views of the rice fields with mountain back drops. A mixture of different religions, traditions and languages. And of course the food – nasi goreng is a travellers’ favourite!

What is your favourite travel memory?

One of my favourite memories was when I was leading a Lombok trip. En route to the hotel we became stuck in traffic due to a wedding convoy. My group was interested to see what was happening, so they got out of the bus and were invited to the party. They had a great time dancing with the locals and enjoying the celebrations!

What tip would you give to someone who’s seeking ‘real life experience’ while travelling?

My top tip is to have an open mind, to talk and interact with local people who are always happy to practice their English and learn about your life also. Indonesian people are very friendly and will always be welcoming.

What led you to becoming a leader?

The desire to show Indonesia to the world! To play at least a very small part in getting the outside world to experience the essence of this land.

Is there one ‘real life experience’ that stands out for you?

In one of our homestays, there was a wedding feast being held. Each member of my group participated in preparing the feast, setting up tents, arranging tables and and even the karaoke machine. I had never experienced something like this either, as I live in a city!

What is your favourite travel destination and why?

The islands of Karimun Java. I love the sun, sand and sea. Our islands are still not as touristy as others in the region, hence they are less polluted and still very much preserved in their natural condition.

What tip would you give to someone who’s seeking ‘real life Experience’ while travelling?

Go on roads less travelled. Don’t be scared to join in. Respond, respect and relax!

If I were hungry in your region, where would you take me to eat?

A small local restaurant in my hometown where they serve the best Rendang and Opor ayam.
